We are experts in our field. We work with a lot of folks who have grown frustrated with the mental health system, those who seek specialized care and have perhaps even had negative experiences with therapy in the past. We recommend thoroughly vetting your therapist by asking questions such as "how long have you been in practice" and "do you have an independent license or are you under supervision"- and if so seek information about the supervision process including your privacy and ability to interact with the supervisor if necessary. We recommend asking about your therapist's qualifications for your specific issue: specifically in couples therapy, as there are many people offering this service without the training needed to do so. Make sure that your couples therapist has post-graduate training in a specific couples framework (i.e. The Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Imago, etc.). Therapists should always treat your relationship as the client, not one person in the relationship.
