Foot massage performed with gentle pressure by a trained therapist, preferably one trained in prenatal massage, is safe for most pregnancies and can bring much needed relief and relaxation. However, avoid foot massage if you have a high-risk pregnancy or have a history of blood clots or swelling. Always talk to your doctor before getting any type of massage during pregnancy to make sure it is OK for you and your baby.
- Always avoid deep pressure on the feet, ankles, calves, and legs during pregnancy.
- Avoid pedicure massages during pregnancy as they are not typically done by trained therapists.
While some people believe certain acupressure points on the foot can induce labor, studies so far have not confirmed this. Research does show foot reflexology may be effective in reducing stress and relieving pain during labor.
