Hill Country Family Therapy
About
People have always been my passion. They fascinate me...what makes them tick, what makes then happy, how they fit together. People are defined by their culture, their beliefs, their relationships, connections, communications, structure, their family, and themselves. All people have connections. Everyone affects everyone they know. When one person has problems, everyone in the family is affected. Sometimes the relationships themselves need work; but everyone needs to tell their story, to feel heard and validated. Everyone deserves to declare their voice, their identity. And sometimes, we all need a little help with telling others our needs and feelings.
I developed my core techniques based around humanistic and client-oriented values. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, I focus on communication, empathetic listening, and encourage deep experiential sharing. When appropriate, I employ cognitive behavioral techniques in my work with clients. Initially, I work to help my clients recognize and manage their fear, anger, and anxiety surrounding current and past trauma. My overall goal is to enable them to deepen their relationships with their significant others, their families, and, most importantly, themselves.

I like to think that we work together to improve ALL of a client's relationships, all of their connections. I enjoy my close relationship with my clients, and I enjoy watching their changes as we progress.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First and foremost, I attempt to ensure the client that we are meeting in an calm, neutral, SAFE and non-judgemental space. I try to establish a warm, caring environment. My primary goal for the first few sessions is to establish trust and rapport. Together, we learn the client's goals, what may be hindering those goals, and how they may be reframed, or achieved.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in psychology, and an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have worked at this craft, off and on, for over 30 years. My orientaion is systemic/relational; however, I can also focus on the individual and their internal processes. I have experience with clients of all ages, from 13 to 70, with a wide range of multiple diagnostics, e.g. SUD, ADHD, MDD, spectrum disorders, self-image issues, etc. I specialize in relational issues, bringing an Experiential lens along with a attachment focus, and using CBT, EFT [for which I have training], and Narrative therapy techniques depending on the best fit for the client.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
As I can not take insurance directly, I have a sliding scale of 60 to 100 dollars per session; most often I price out at $75/session hour. I can take cash, check, or Paypal
How did you get started in this business?
I've been a counselor in the early and mid 1980's. I continued using those skills through the 90's and early aughts. I decided to get a license about 7 years ago, and graduated with my MA two years ago, achieving my license last year. I have alway been fascinated by people!
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with visually impaired multi-handicapped tweens and teens; I have worked with institutionalized and non-institutionalized clients. I have worked with homeless people with mulitple diagnostics [SUD, MDD, Schizophrenia, etc.]. I have worked with a wide range of people, including couples, individuals, groups, LGBTIQA, and people going through numerous transitions.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I took great joy in seeing my family over the holidays. These included my FOO and my FOC. Connecting with the multi-generations, finding out what all are involved in, the sorrows and joys of the year...well, it was a bit overwhelming; but then, so were the offerings of support and good cheer!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Looks for someone who listens. Who makes eye contact. Who is able feed your story back to you in a way you understand. Who inspires hope, even on the first day. It really doesn't matter what branch or school of therapy is offered; if they can do these simple things, you will have a much better chance of achieving your therapeutic goals.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Do I need therapy? Am I clear on my goals? Am I ready to change? Do I need help? Am I not ashamed to ask for that help? [These will do for a start.]
