About

I always wanted to be a therapist, but my dad suggested "be a nurse, you'll always have a job". So, I'm a Registered Nurse. (he was right, and I love it). Then I got leukemia, had a Bone Marrow Transplant, and after my recovery - yay - went to grad school at the University of Chicago and now I have my dream job - counseling! It fills my heart with joy when I partner with my clients!

We become a team and I so enjoy watching clients grow and reach their goals! My fortes are relationships, marriage, trauma, acute/chronic illness, and grief. Anxiety and depression are addressed in all areas as needed. I see adults. I really hope you will reach out to me and see if we are a good fit! The name of my practice is About Caring Counseling. "It's not just about therapy, it's about caring!" Maybe a little corny, but it's genuine!

Frequently asked questions

You tell me what you want from our time together. That becomes my job description. I care very much about your personal history, your family of origin and how this influenced who you are today. And that will be integrated into your sessions. However, we will start with what brought you to me. What is going on now? Some need is not being met. We will set a long term goal and 2 short term goals along with objectives to reach these goals. After you unload for most of the session so that I can better understand your needs,  we'll wrap this task of goal setting in about 5 minutes. Then we get to work. If you stumble between sessions, you may contact me for 15 minutes free contact to support you.

I am a Registered Nurse which gives me a broad understanding of your physical self and if some of your current issues could be medical. I am not a physician. I'm not there to diagnose anything medical. But I have a vast medical/psychiatric background and it is a wonderful additional credential.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Very well educated at the University of Chicago clinical tract in therapy.

I have Level I and Level II certification in Crisis Intervention.

I do volunteer public speaking (American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society of America, MIFA (Memphis InterFaith Association) and paid assorted corporate speaking and training.

Due to COVID-19 and the high need for mental health services, I have lowered my rate to $125.00. I DO NOT accept any insurance. I will provide you with necessary information if you choose to file out-of-network claim. Occasionally, I can request that the insurance company give me a single client in-network status. I DO accept MEDICARE.

I earned the credentials to open my own private practice in counseling.

Wide diversity of clients. I am from the Chicago suburbs but for the last two decades, I have lived in Memphis TN. I just moved home a few months ago and am working toward transitioning my practice to Chicao. In Memphis I worked in private practice with all the diverse population. I also worked in a private psychiatric hospital, a state psychiatric hospital, and a Veterans Administration Spinal Cord Injury unit. At the state hospital, I was involved in teaching classes and working with a diverse demographic of mental health patients. I also with a a population of forensic patients at two hospitals.

A client came to me because her husband had recently passed away. She wanted to know how to help herself and her two children grieve. Her biggest concern was helping the childern. She then referred me to other family members. As it turned out, I ended up seeing several family members for very different issues. They were all hard working customers, so therapy had a distinct begining middle and end. They met their goals!

Fit. It's all about fit, in my opinion. If we don't "click" you'll know it after a few sessions.

What happened that makes me want counseling now?

Do I need someone to talk to, someone that listens and cares? Or do I need to change something in my life that isn't working? A belief? A behavior?
