Being the only mental health music therapist in north Alabama, and the only Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) therapist in the state-- it gives me a lot of satisfaction to offer this approach to mental health care to my community. In my experience, music offers people another way to express and experience their emotions. Sometimes a song says it better than we can! I'm excited to see how music can change the lives of my clients in ways they never expected! Even though I've been a music therapist for 25+ years, I'm still amazed at how powerful music can be in helping people....

I began my journey to be a counselor in 2012. It was a calling for me, and when I am able to help others, I am blessed. There is no greater reward in my life than to help others succeed, and overcome personal battles. I am a graduate of Liberty University, and hold an ALC license in the State of Alabama. Most of my experience has been working with trauma of all types, including sexually abused children. I have always, even as a young boy have been a servant to others, especially those who have suffered mentally and emotionally. What I enjoy most about this work is that it helps me sleep at night knowing that I am able to help someone else....

Just so you know, my eyes don't see the person you used to be, I only see the person you are fighting to become". This defines the work I do daily with my clients. I will support you with empathy and compassion along the pathway to healing. "Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. Frank says, "I found CPPE to be very prompt, extremely professional and highly productive. I went to them because I identified some professional development needs that could be helped by some coaching interventions. Their services really met all of my needs. If I measured CPPE against some of the many consulting firms that I used when I was a senior level corporate executive, responsible for the professional development of executives in a Fortune 100 company, they would rank in the top five per cent." Your Therapy and Counseling questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thervo.

How much does therapy cost?

Therapy costs $100 to $250 per session if not covered by insurance, depending on the therapist's experience or specialty, therapy type, and your location. Prices are on the high end of the range in major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and New York. The average cost of therapy with insurance is $20 to $60 per session for the copay.

Online therapy costs $50 to $110 per week and typically includes support through texting, phone, or online chat. Some plans include one or two live video sessions per week with a licensed therapist.

Can therapists prescribe medication?

Therapists are licensed psychologists or counselors but are not medical doctors, and in most states in the U.S. they are not allowed to prescribe medication. Only five states allow licensed psychologists to prescribe medication—Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, and New Mexico—and psychologists in these states must complete additional psychopharmacology training and certification.

In the rest of the U.S., only a medical doctor can prescribe medication. Psychiatrists attend medical school and can prescribe medication, but they typically do not provide talk therapy or counseling services.

Can a therapist diagnose ADHD, autism, depression, or other conditions?

A licensed therapist can give a mental health diagnosis in all states except Indiana and Maine. However, the therapist must refer clients to a psychiatrist or other medical doctor if the condition requires medication. Consult a therapist near you if you have concerns about ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, or other mental health conditions.

Can I use my Health Savings Account (HSA) for therapy?

You can use your HSA or FSA for therapy if you have a billable diagnosis—such as depression or bipolar disorder—and the therapy is deemed medically necessary. You can't use your HSA or FSA for marriage or family counseling, grief counseling, or therapy for stress management.

Can I see my therapist while traveling?

You can see your therapist while traveling only if your therapist is licensed or legally permitted to practice in the state you're physically located in at the time of the session. Not all states allow interstate therapy practice. Check with your therapist before you leave to confirm they can provide telehealth services across state lines.

How often should I go to therapy?

Most therapists recommend starting with one session per week. After your first session, your therapist will work with you to decide on a schedule that will most benefit you. Some issues require only a few sessions, while others require more extensive treatment.

How can I choose the best therapist near me?

When seeking therapy or mental health care, follow these tips to help you find the right therapist for you:

First consider the type of therapy you'd prefer. Common therapy styles and modalities include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • Humanistic therapy
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

Choose therapists who specialize in treating your condition. Then:

  • Ask for recommendations from your medical provider.
  • Read reviews on Thervo and Google.
  • Confirm the therapist is licensed to practice in your area.
  • Meet with the therapist for an initial session to make sure their personality and treatment style is a good fit for you.

What questions should I ask therapists?

Ask these questions to help you find a therapist who is the best fit for you:

  • How long have you been practicing, and what are your certifications?
  • What therapy style or modalities do you practice?
  • What is your philosophy as a therapist?
  • What does a typical therapy session look like?
  • Are you more directive or guiding as a counselor?
  • Do you give homework or reading assignments?
  • How do you determine success in therapy?
  • What is your success rate in treating past clients with this issue?
  • Will you see me if I run into problems between sessions?

Jack S.
Stephen gave me confidence that I was lacking during my job search. He provided me tools that helped me keep record of where I had applied, who I had interviewed with, and what my next steps would be. The best piece of advice he gave me was that I needed to follow up with my interviewers a day after an interview, and to keep contacting them until I either had a job offer or a rejection. Each of my five sessions with Stephen were productive, as he gave my things to work on before our next meeting. I did my final session the night before an in-person interview that I had been looking forward to for weeks. Stephen and I did a mock interview, and he gave me critical feedback that helped the day of the interview. I started my sessions with Stephen in late October, and by the first week of December, I had started my new job. I honestly don't think I could have done it without his help. I highly suggest working with Stephen if you're getting down on yourself during your job search. He kept me focused on my goal of getting a new job after a relocation.
