How did you get started in this business?
The history of PDX Bodyworks PT is one where two practitioners shared similar experiences whereby the traditional PT approach of stretching and strengthening exercise were very limited in providing long term relief. This provided the drive to seek out something more effective. Through extensive post graduate training in manual therapy they began seeing profound changes in their patients outcomes, which led them to becoming sought out practitioners not just for acute injuries, but especially chronic ones. They began seeing significantly positive outcomes in patients who had gone months [or years] with low back pain, a limp or limited ability to function in life, sports, or on-the-job; many that had never heard of Physical Therapy or seen a manual physical therapist! Often, these folks had outright poor experiences in the health care system that never resolved their problem. People that were told awful things by healthcare providers like “you shouldn’t be in pain”, “there’s nothing wrong with you”, “you just need to lose weight”, “it’s all in your head”, “you're just trying to take advantage of the system”, “you must not want to get better”, “you’re just seeking more pain medication”, and the list goes on. It became clear that we needed a more direct way to connect with people who wanted to get well, but just did not get the right help along their way. Our practice was born!
What types of customers have you worked with?
Pain or injury of your muscles, bones or nerves [your musculoskeletal system] - is the specific treatment expertise of physical therapists. Our combined experience of nearly 30 years has shown that manual therapy treatments, along with properly dosed movement and exercise, get people feeling better and back to their normal life, it not the life they’ve always wanted to live. We arm people with knowledge and an ongoing plan to stay active and keep up with their busy lives. We strive for a practice that connects people with quality manual Physical Therapy early in their search for pain relief, knowledge, and notable improvement in their lives.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Just this past weekend Shawn & Greg took 2 of their children and joined a mission trip to build a house in Juarez, Mexico for a family living in poverty. This trip made a tremendous impression on all of us and we are looking forward to doing it again next year.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Find a manual therapist with experience that can provide 1 on 1 hands on care for you, lasting at least 30-60 minutes each visit, whom you can expect to see consistently. Ask if they routinely perform a grade 5 mobilization, which sets them apart in their post-graduate training.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
How serious are you about getting well? If it's an old condition, what are you willing to do to get it fixed? Are you willing to make the commitment to coming in to PT regularly, performing the home exercises consistently, and if you don't have insurance, are you willing to make the financial investment in your health and wellness? All things considered, physical therapy is significantly less expensive then long term co-pays for medication, lost time from work, or worst case scenario surgery if you let it go on for too long.
