About
I feel tremendous joy when I am able to help my clients achieve their goals and/or heal from emotional, relational, or spiritual wounds.
I have over 30 years of professional experience helping children and adults improve their emotional, psychological, relational, & spiritual health.
My patients consistently give me five star ratings and they often refer their friends and family members.
I believe I am a competent, caring, and compassionate counselor. I have a large number of referral options for patients who need additional support or psychiatric treatment.
I accept private pay clients and those wanting to use their medical insurance. I am usually able to obtain partial or full reimbursement from insurance companies for covered procedures. (I am a preferred provider for Anthem BC/BS and an out-of-network provider for most other insurance companies.)
I particularly enjoy working with couples, families and adolescents.
I offer biblically based counseling for Christians who request it.
I convey empathy and a non-judgmental attitude; I am curious and interested in each of my client's personal history and their current thoughts, emotions, struggles, and situations.
I encourage my patients to have compassion for themselves, develop trust in relatiionships, become more aware of their personal strengths, come to appreciate the positive traits of their partners and family members, and communicate (when they are ready) all of their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive counseling environment.
Each of my clients feel free to work on their issues at their own pace without feeling pressured to explore anything they aren't ready to discuss.
I believe in God's ability to help me help others and to bring about positive outcomes in our psychotherapy sessions.
I am the author of "Soaring - Lessons in Faith, Hope, and Love Learned from the Psychologist's Chair" as well as many articles and blogs about psychotherapy and Christian living.
Please feel free to contact me to inquire about my approach to therapy and/or the types of psychotherapy modalities I offer.
I look forward to the opportunity to work with you as you pursue YOUR (not what others think) personal and unique goals!

I accept copays or coinsurance payments from clients and bill your insurance company for covered services.
How did you get started in this business?
I have wanted to be in the helping professions since I was a child (either helping humans or animals).
At age 5 or 6 I wanted to become a fireman; when I entered college I was considering becoming a marine biologist but found I enjoyed my psychology classes more than biology; after completing a bachelor's degree in psychology I considered going to seminary to become a pastor or pastoral counselor but decided my interests were mainly in providing professional psychotherapy to individuals, couples, children, and families.
I have never regreted my decision to become a psychologist (except when thinking about how much more I would be making if I had become a psychiatrist... Just kidding!).
I have worked at several mental health clinics prior to entering private practice and learned a lot from those experiences. I have worked as a career counselor (briefly), a psychological consultant for a correctional facility for teens, a social worker doing in-home counseling and crisis intervention, a psychologist visiting nursing home residents, and a therapist offering outreach counseling in a mobile unit. As you can see, I have had a rather diverse career so far.
I have been in private practice since 1987.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have experience working with young adults, teens and children 5 and up, couples, families, groups, and mentally ill patients.
I specialize in couples counseling and working with depressed and/or anxious clients.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy traveling, scuba diving, chess, billards, and walking my dog.
Of course I especially enjoy spending time with my granddaughter and my two grown daughters (as well as my amazing wife)!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Hire someone who has many years of experience and who is still passionate about serving patients/clients. And someone who enjoys life, has an optimist outlook, and truly cares about his or her clients.
(Which of course means someone like me! LOL)
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Am I wanting brief solution-focused therapy (3 to 10 sessions) or do I need to connect with a psychotherapist I can continue seeing for several months or years.
What can I afford to spend on therapy?
What are the existential costs of delaying the help I or my marriage/family/relationship needs?
How soon can I be seen?
Is the office accessible and private?
Does this counselor offer virtual (online or video based) therapy?
What does my insurance cover psychotherap, and am I willing to be diagnosed with a psychological problem in order to have my insurance cover a portion of my therapy costs?
Does the counselor have experience dealing with people who have similar symptoms as mine?
Is the therapist willing to talk a little about himself (or herself) to build a strong therapeutic alliance?
Am I ready to open up, share my deepist feelings, and trust someone to truly understand me so that I can get the help I need?
Has the therapist ever "been on the other side of the couch" (been a counselee) so that they have some empathy regarding the challenge & possible stigma that can be associated with seeing a psychologist or counselor?
