About

Brad Milliken is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Seeing clients in person at Sequoia Counseling and Therapy Services in Redwood City, California and via Zoom if Covid concerns are paramount. Brad specializes in teens and couples, treating anxiety, depression, substance abuse, self-esteem and social challenges. Brad also offers a clinical focus on significant life changes, such as career change, divorce, loss of a partner or redefining life direction. Brad has lived and worked extensively overseas, giving him an understanding and appreciation of many diverse cultures.

The best part is seeing people take control of their lives. My greatest joy is to see a client improving, and starting to appreciate life again. Adversity in life is a given, but suffering is optional. Therapy is a collaborative project, and I involve the client in the process, it's never a mystery. Connection with the therapist should "feel right" or you should move on. I often hear that I "get" who my client really is, and many times I'm told that's the first time that's happened for them in therapy. That's the crucial first step to feeling more fulfilled, to feeling happy with who you are, and learning to deal with difficult situations or difficult people in your life. Seeing that unfold is why I do this.

Frequently asked questions

Brad provides a complimentary 20 minute consultation with prospective clients. This process allows both client and therapist to determine if a good therapeutic alliance can develop. Questions can be answered and the presenting issues can be briefly discussed. Brad believes that therapy should not be mysterious, so he will give the client an idea of how treatment would be effective to meet their goals.

Brad's training includes a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University, and years of clinical experience in a community-based agency in the South Bay, seeing a wide range of outpatients from 10 years old to seeing elders. At a homeless and runaway shelter, Brad saw at-risk youth who have severe problems with home stability situations. Brad is trained in Seven Challenges, a harm-reduction program to address substance abuse, and extensive work with the Center for Living With Dying to assist those struggling with a major loss in their life. In private practice, Brad sees a wide range of clients, but teens and couples are a special focus.

Brad is a private-pay provider who can generate "super-bills" for clients to get reimbursed for services. The base rate applies unless the client is under financial stress, in which case a sliding scale rate can be negotiated.

Brad took an early retirement from his international photograpy business, and entered the psychology field in order to "give back" to the community, and see individuals transform into a more satisfying and fulfilling life.
