About

My name is Thomas Mitchell Finch, and I was born in Virginia Beach, VA. I currently reside on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

I studied at The College of William and Mary (B.A. Philosophy 2013) and Elon University School of Law (J.D. 2016). I am licensed to practice law in North Carolina (2020). I am admitted to practice on behalf of clients in all North Carolina courts.

I entered the legal industry working as a paralegal in James Ellenson Law Firm in Newport News, VA assisting with traffic and criminal defense matters in state and federal courts for approximately four years ranging from misdemeanor and felony cases to a federal death penalty case.

I owned my own company supporting up to four attorneys in a variety of litigation, research, and legal project management assignments.

I also worked as Bankruptcy Case Administrator at The Merna Law Group, P.C. in Virginia Beach, VA where I supported four attorneys serving hundreds of clients in the Eastern District of Virginia Bankruptcy Courts. I successfully closed 300+ Chapter 7 cases handling a wide variety of matters for attorneys, clients, creditors, and trustees.

During law school, I interned with the City of Greensboro Legal Department in the City Attorney’s Office for approximately a year and half. During this time I contributed solutions to a wide variety of legal issues including: economic development, voting rights and redistricting, federal transportation grants, ADA compliance, records compliance, civil litigation, document review of more than 30,000 pages, and local government issues.

I am deeply committed to recognizing all of my clients as people, who are important parts of their communities. I believe that legal challenges and issues are barriers to people and businesses reaching their full potential.

I want to develop relationships with clients and community stakeholders that increase access to legal resources for individuals and businesses throughout their lives so that our communities can grow and become more resilient.

I intend to meet that goal by: applying all of my education and experience to the needs of each and every client, committing to understanding who you are as a person, what your legal challenges are and how they are affecting you, and plotting a course to help you find your next safe harbor.

Most matters are billed on a flat fee, determined by the attorney in advance.

Occassionally, matters may be billed on an hourly basis. Matters billed on an hourly basis may require a deposit which the attorney bills against, or the attorney may bill time and the client pays after receiving an invoice.

Billing is explained in detail in the engagement letter.

I started working in the legal industry as a law clerk in 2012 and eventually worked as litigation paralegal and bankruptcy case administrator before opening my own firm.
