Law Office of KG, PLLC offers aggressive and client-centered representation. We also work with medical providers by offering Letters of Protection that puts a hold of payment of medical expenses until the time that the case is resolved. In family law cases, we aim to keep fees down and encourage clients on decisions that are the wisest for their situation and future, that are often hard to recognize under the emotion of family court. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We generally answer immediate questions on the phone or in an email and then schedule for a free consultation at the office or at a convenient location for the potential client, where the potential client can consider whether our firm will be a good fit.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an undergraduate pre-law minor and a juris doctorate, where I focused on trial litigation.

In family cases, we strive to keep fees down so that we can issue a retainer refund, rather than having to bill above the refund. In injury cases, we don't stop until we have every last penny. Many times personal injury protection insurance will nickle and dime payments, then refuse to pay the final hundred or thousand. We are known to file suit against those insurers for failure to pay benefits and for the violation of the duty to their insured. In those suits, attorney fees are recoverable.
How did you get started in this business?
I was a paralegal for a year after my undergraduate degree, which is what encouraged me to continue to get my law degree.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Our injury clients are client who have been injured, or lost a loved one due to negligence of another.
Our family law clients are seeking a divorce, orders concerning custody and/or child support, modification of orders, and/or enforcement of orders.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Unfortunately most settlements or lawsuits aren't going to happen over night. They take time based on the court and other counsel's schedule, the amount of issues that are contested and the ability of the parties to work together. We have a case where it should have been concluded some time ago, that is dragging on because the opposing counsel won't comply with the rules, so we have to take him back to court every time we need to get something done on the case. Who the opposing counsel is, certainly is one of the biggest indicators of how fast the case can be wrapped up.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
It is best to hire an attorney that has worked in the same area of law, in the same location for over 5 years. Additionally, an attorney that focuses on specific areas of practice such as injury and family law, rather than doing a general practice, is another thing that you want to look out for. We have been practicing family law and personal injury since we opened the firm doors almost 10 years ago in Austin, Texas. We know most of the judges, opposing counsel, and Travis County court systems, which have the trickiest docket in the state.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
For injury potential clients, the attorneys will ask about injuries, amount paid or charged to date, medical provider names, and provide the contact information for the person that injured them, along with any police report number. For family potential clients, the attorneys will ask about status quo possession for custody cases, payroll information for generally last 3 months for child support cases, and about all assets and debts for divorce cases. If an attorney isn't asking these questions, it would raise some concern to me that they, either may not be too familiar with the area of practice, or if they offer a free consultation, they may be waiting to get this information until they can bill for the work. Either reason should raise concern. On hourly cases, we don't bill for every little thing, we give a lot of leeway and we are generous with courtesy write-offs.
