About

The goal of this firm is helping families with children with special needs (Autism, Down Syndrome, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, etc.) in areas including Special Education Law, Family Law, Probate/Trusts, and Guardianship. It is overwhelming receiving confirmation of a child’s disability. The people who make up this firm want to guide you regarding the prioritization of legal issues to address, such as whether a Special Needs Trust is right for you and your child. Is a Medical Power of Attorney with a Durable Power of Attorney sufficient or is Guardianship of an adult child with special needs appropriate? Contact us to schedule an appointment for a consultation.

Leona E. Filis received her Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law in 2002. While working at The Filis Law Firm, PC and The Law Offices of Larry L. Mayo, PC, Leona focused on civil cases, including divorces, enforcement actions, modifications, bankruptcies, breach of contract suits. Leona has years of experience tailoring clients’ wills and trusts to meet the clients’ expectations.

As a parent, Leona has evaluated IEPs and attended ARDs advocating for her autistic son and protecting his right to receive speech and occupational therapy, along with personal care services.

What is the silver lining in a divorce? Keeping the family members in as positive of a mindset as possible. Divorce can be cordial and peaceful if attorneys will work with their clients as professionals who focus on reducing the negative impact of divorce on the children. The couple in a divorce can maintain a friendly and respectful relationship and I enjoy working with families to successfully minize the disruption in their lives while going through a divorce.
