About

Kevin Hinzman and Craig Flory formed Hinzman & Flory, PLLC in 1999, dedicating their firm to the proposition that all people deserve strong and effective legal representation. In the adversarial world of criminal law, Kevin and Craig believe it is important for their potential clients to know where they have placed their priorities as lawyers throughout their careers.

Both have devoted their entire professional lives to the defense of accused, rather than their prosecution. Neither have ever worked for the Denton County District Attorney or any other prosecuting authority. For over a combined 40 years, Hinzman & Flory have defended the constitutional rights of the people of Denton County and the State of Texas with passion and a firm commitment to the principles of the Constitution of the United States.

In addition to Hinzman & Flory's criminal practice, Kevin has overseen a successful family law and wills and estates practice throughout the firm's existence. Kevin and Craig are also extremely pleased that Hinzman & Flory can now offer expert immigration services through Of Counsel attorney Jered Dobbs.

Kevin, Craig and Jered decided to become lawyers in order to help people, and they have each pursued their professional careers under a single unifying purpose: to provide effective and honest legal representation meeting the highest standards of the profession to the members of their community.

For over twenty years we have represented clients from all walks of life and from countries all over the world. These clients have come from every different socioeconomic level and we have helped them with countless different issues, always with a focus on providing the best legal representation tailored toward each individual's needs. There is no better feeling in the world than receiving the gratitude and thanks from a client that we have helped, or being told how important our relationship with them has been in their life. And it has never been boring!

“I have never had legal trouble before, so the situation was very frightening for me. Craig and Kevin were able to ease my fears. They were also able to reduce my case to a lesser charge than I thought I would receive, helping me both financially and professionally. I would highly recommend them for your legal services.”

Craig Flory was highly professional and understanding. He helped us alleviate the results of misbehavior on the part of certain probation personnel and even lessen the terms of and duration of the probation period. I would highly recommend him.

We’ve relied on Hinzman & Flory for our legal concerns more than once, and we’ve been hugely impressed with the results. Kevin Hinzman guided us through the intricacies of getting our wills/estates in order, and made that process not only understandable but enjoyable—a big sigh of relief for something we’d needed to take care of for years. And Craig Flory has been absolutely essential in providing legal counsel and doing all the intricate legal work for my Denton nonprofit, The Art Room, to become a 501(c)3. His knowledge, insights, acumen, and thoroughness have been invaluable; we couldn’t have done it without him. Five stars all the way, highly recommended—working with both Kevin and Craig has been a pleasure and given us complete confidence in dealing with all things legal.

    Kevin Hinzman

After graduating from the University of Texas School of Law, I worked for a year in Dallas on mass litigation cases involving Texas Instruments and Southwestern Bell, as well as an asbestos class action lawsuit. This experience gave me the motivation and confidence to start my own practice, with the goal of building a firm that would provide individual service to benefit the members of my community.

Having previously attended UNT, where I met my wife of 25 years, I knew Denton would be a great place to raise a family. So in 1995, along with our one-year-old son, we made the move back to Denton where I have built my law practice and raised my family ever since. We love Denton and could not imagine living and working anyplace else.

    Craig Flory

Growing up as the son of a career military officer, I always desired to have a career involving some sort of service benefitting our nation and its people. I began graduate school with an eye towards a PhD and a career teaching history before deciding that I wanted something more proactive.

My interests heading into law school at the University of Texas were constitutional and civil rights law, as well as environmental law. During law school and for my first year after graduation, I was able to gain valuable working experience in these fields, handling employment discrimination cases with two different firms, and a short term project with an environmental law firm. I also worked on several projects on a pro bono basis for the NAACP. The move to criminal law was a natural one, as I feel it is in many ways the cornerstone of civil rights law.

    Jered Dobbs, Of Counsel

As I progressed through law school at the University of Houston, I gained exposure to immigration law and the difficult plight of immigrants to the U.S. Few areas of law affect people to such a degree as immigration, and it became clear to me this was the way I was meant to serve others. I participated in the school’s immigration clinic and interned with the Phoenix Immigration Court as well. I began my career after law school clerking for the Dallas Immigration Court. During my two years in this position, I advised the Court’s immigration judges on a wide range of complicated immigration cases. After leaving my clerkship at the Dallas Immigration Court, I practiced for five years at a respected immigration firm in Dallas, before starting a solo immigration practice in 2017.

I have dedicated my career to assisting immigrants from all walks of life, regularly defending immigrants from deportation in immigration court and on appeal with the Board of Immigration Appeals, and I have also represented hundreds of families seeking permanent residence for loved ones through adjustment of status and consular processing, including cases involving complex waivers of inadmissibility. Additionally, I have a great deal of experience in the field of trade and investor visas, having assisted many companies at all stages of development in procuring E-1 trader or E-2 investor visas for their employees. I also have experience procuring L visas, TN visas, and other temporary employment visas for employers and employees.

DISMISSAL OF FELONY POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE – SUMMER 2018

Craig Flory successfully negotiated a dismissal of his client’s State Jail Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance case by arguing that the search of the client’s automobile was unconstitutional and convincing the District Attorney that a Motion to Suppress Evidence would be granted by the Court. Client was arrested for shoplifting, and, during an inventory search of his vehicle in preparation for towing, narcotics were found by one of the arresting officers. After reviewing police video, Flory demonstrated to the DA that the impoundment of his client’s vehicle was a pretense to conduct an illegal warrantless search since the store manager had stated to the client and police that the vehicle could be left on the store property for the time required for a family member to get the car off the property.

NOT GUILTY IN ASSAULT (FAMILY VIOLENCE) TRIAL – SPRING 2013

Kevin Hinzman received a not guilty verdict from the jury in an Assault Causing Bodily Injury (Family Violence) case despite the alleged victim’s deep and visible bite marks. Hinzman successfully argued self-defense by establishing that the complaining witness’s statement about how the client bit him were not physically possible. During trial, Hinzman set up chairs in front of the jury to replicate the front seat of the car where the incident occurred, and then had the complaining witness attempt to demonstrate how the client could have bitten him in the manner he claimed and still have caused the visible bite marks to be in the position they were found. He could not. During the client’s testimony, she clearly articulated where and how she bit the complaining witness in self-defense and Hinzman was able to show the jury how her version of events would have resulted in bite marks in the location and pattern found on the complaining witness.

The legal professional is comprised of thousands of dedicated, talented, and honest lawyers. Unfortunately, as is true with all professions, not all members live up to these basic standards. The attorneys of Hinzman & Flory do. We refuse to be anything but honest with our clients about what we may be able to achieve in our representation. We will provide a true assessment of your case using our years of experience practicing law and based on the results that we have achieved in similar cases. If we don't have an answer we will be honest with you about that as well, and will never provide false hope in order to be hired. Attorneys should never promise or guarantee any result. There is one exception to this rule that we do make in that we do guarantee that we will do everything in our power to help you as our client. Our advice, then, is to beware of any attorney that makes any guarantee or promise about results that somehow has a false ring about it, ora seems intended to ensure that they are hired.

Our goal during consultations with clients is to provide all of the relevant information you need to make a decision on whether to retain our services. We always end any consultation by asking you have any further questions for us. By the end of our consultation we will already have covered many topics including:

    (1) A detailed discussion of your background and legal issue,

    (2) A step-by-step explanation of the legal process involved in your case,

    (3) A discussion of potential and desired outcomes for your case, and

    (4) The cost of our representation and a discussion of payment plans as needed.

The above topics may be used by you before meeting with us to think of specific questions within the topics which you may have beforehand. By the end of the consultation, many, if not all, of the relevant questions will have been answered. If not, we are generous with our time during consultations and will continue answering any questions you may still have.
