Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I meet with the client for an intake interview where I try to learn their history and what has brought them to my office. We discuss what their objectives are and how the process will move forward. I then give the client paperwork that they need to complete to so we can begin. During that intake interview I also set the retainer, based upon the issues involved in their individual case.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated Cum Laude from Suffolk University Law School in Boston in 1982. Since then I have participated in numerous professional training programs and handled hundreds of cases representing people from all walks of life.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Generally I set a retainer that must be paid before I begin. I then bill against the retainer, ususally a the rate of $250.00 - $275.00 per hour, depending on the case. I require clients to maintain a balance of $1,500.00 in their retainer account so there is always money to work with as the case proceeds. If there are funds remaining after the case is finished I refund those funds.
How did you get started in this business?
I began working in a small law office doing primarily real estate conveyancing. I then became a Hearing Office for the Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission and then returned to private practice with a small firm in Attleboro, Massachusetts. I have had cases throughout Massachusetts, but the majority of my practice is in Bristol, Norfolk, Plymouth and Barnstable counties.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I represent men and women, and sometimes children, from all walks of life. I have represented people who work in private industry, medical professionals, small business owners, government employees, including people who work in the court system, and many other types of people. Some of my clients have minimum wage jobs, others earn high six figure incomes. And of course, some of my clients have no employment outside of the home.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Check with friends and family members who either have been involved with the type of legal issues you are dealing with, or who might know someone who has been.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Most of my clients are divorce clients, so they need to make decisions about what they want out of the divorce, what they are willing to give up to achieve their objectives, and how much they want to spend in legal fees. For example, clients often need to decide whther they want to keep the marital home at the expense of retirement assets. Or whether they want to pay legal fees in a fight over which spouse will retain a specific piece of furniture.
