Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Clients meet with a specialist who helps get them set up with the right attorney. (There are seven at our firm, and all have different specialities in one to two of our practice areas.) After that, our clients can choose to have a face to face meeting with the attorney, a video or telephone conference with the attorney, or skip the attorney meeting altogether. Regardless of which option the client chooses, our office will immediately get to work to ensure that the personal injury, workers compensation, social security, or bankruptcy case we handle is quickly and efficiently resolved, with optimal results and minimal disruption to our client's daily lives.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All of our attorneys have Juris Doctorates. None of our practice areas have specialization. Our four practice areas are personal injury, workers compensation, social security, and bankruptcy.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Every practice area has different pricing, sometimes set forth by state or federal law:
Personal Injury (KY and OH) and Workers Compensation (OH) - 33.3% of the settlement or judgment pre-suit, or 40% after filing a lawsuit.
Workers Compensation (KY) - 20% of the first $25,000; 15% of the next $25,000; 10% of the remainder, up to a cap of $18,000. This is a state law that applies to all attorneys.
Social Security - 25% of the past due award, up to a cap of $6,000. This is a federal law that applies to all attorneys.
Chapter 7 Bankruptcy - Pricing varies based on several factors, but generally no more than $1,670.
Chapter 13 Bankruptcy - No up front fees (we get paid through the Trustee's office), but court filing fees and expenses require $365 up front.
What types of customers have you worked with?
At this point, we've worked with someone of almost every conceivable background, both in the Greater Cincinnati area and across most of the country. We always work for people, never for businesses.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Go to the office and see if the attorney and his or her staff conduct themselves like professionals. If they don't act professional, and the office doesn't look professional, there's no reason to think they'll treat your case professionally.
Also, attorneys aren't general utility tools. Attorneys get good at certain practice areas, but no one can be good at all practice areas. Look on the website and see if the practice area you are interested in seems like an afterthought. If so, there is a good chance the attorney rarely does that kind of work. Avoid going to a solo practioner that does eight kinds of law, and the kind you need is at the bottom of the list!
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
The attorney or staff member needs to be able to explain the process to you in terms you can understand. If he or she can't do that, something is wrong. There's no place for imcomprehensible legal jargon in client meetings.
It is ok if you deal with a paralegal or secretary a lot - they are often highly trained and assist in good communication. Think of them like nurses at a doctor's office. But you should be able to meet your attorney and speak to him or her at least at the beginning of the case and during important points in time like going to court or sending demands for settlement. If you can't pick your attorney out of a lineup, then something is wrong.
