Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The two of us speak, either virtually or in person, to discuss client priorities and special needs, and to see if we may be a good fit. I am then retained; and we proceed in a manner that is best suited to the requirements of the client.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Cornell University undergraduate (Major in Economics), Class of 1976.
Albany Law School, Class of 1979.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
The goal is to determine an approximate number of hours and multiply that amount by my regular hourly rate of $400.
How did you get started in this business?
My first job as an attorney back in 1980 was as the "legs" of an attorney in his 80s, doing everything that required being out of the office. It was a general practice, with Court appearances, depositions, visiting clients in jail, real estate closings, and the like.
I discovered that the only types of cases that I was interested in were the matrimonial and family law cases for the simple reason that I had regular (often daily, sometimes multiple times daily) contact with the client; and I realized that on these matters I truly made (and continue to make) a large difference in the lives of my clients.
After 6 months of general practice, I went to work for a matrimonial attorney handling complex litigation and appeals. I met with clients, drafted papers, appeared in Court, settled cases, tried cases and processed appeals. I experienced first-hand all aspects of contested matrimonial law.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I represent men and women, gay and straight people, and people of all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. I am sensitive to all of the needs of the particular client.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
During the current coronavirus pandemic, I have been able to continue to meet the needs of my clients, speaking with them regularly; and I have been able to continue their cases as much as possible even though the Courts are largely closed.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Hiring a matrimonial attorney is similar to buying a pair of shoes. Try on a few before buying; and whichever lawyer you feel most comfortable with and confident in, that is the lawyer you should hire. All lawyers are not alike. Some will try cases to suit their own ego. Some will do anything (including sell out the client) to avoid a trial. Others, like me, will use the judicial process as best as I can to leverage the entire situation to achieve optimal results.
