Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I do not charge any fee until the client and I agree that I should represent their interests. I prefer to meet and discuss the client's needs and understand their problems before agreeing to take on the case.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In addition to practicing law, I have written the commentatry to four chapters of Michigan Criminal Jury Instructions Annotated and my own book on admission to practice. I have taught at UDM School of Law, MSU College of Law, and Eastern Michigan University. I regularly teach other lawyers and take classes to improve my knowledge and experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Depending on the matter, I do quote clients flat rate fees and hourly fees. I explain all billing procedures and costs to the client and put all quotes and terms in writing.
How did you get started in this business?
After finishing undergraduate studies and a stint in the military, I went to night school and worked as a court officer. Once I graduated, I worked as an insurance defense lawyer for 5 years. I started my solo practice in 1998 and have not looked back since that time.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I represent a broad variety of interesting individuals and small businesses. I have represented criminal clients on all ranges of cases from traffic misdemeanors to captial felonies.
I represent attorneys and other licensees who have problems that involve their right to practice their given professiona
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was please with my last trial in Hazel Park District Court. Despite the judge ruling against my client at all pre-trial hearings and during trial and despite the outlandish claims being made by the complainant, my client and I heard the two word (i.e. not guilty) from the jury in less than 20 minutes. It reminds me that some days you just have to fight.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Whenever I hire any professional, I ask myself: 1) How did this lawyer treat me? 2) Did he sound honest without embellishing the chances of success or scaring me with the consequences of losing? 3) Does he understand what my problem is and what I would like to see happen? 4) Does he explain the law and the legal process to me to address my problem? 5) Did he quote a fee and explain it? In writing?
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
I advise anyone seeking to hire a professional to ask questions about expertise and ability. Before going into a meeting, look at that professional's background and look at the professional's reputation online. Try to have an understanding of what the price range is for representation and make sure to understand what the fees pay for.
