Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
1st step is to obtain information from a prespective client, usually we will have an initial office conference where the problems and potential solutions are discussed, sometimes I will obtain the information during a telephone conversation if the client is from out of state, or has difficulties in travelling. The 2nd step is for me to prepare the necessary and appropriate documents to resolve the problem. These are reviewed with the client, and then filed with the Court and served on the other party.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As all attorneys I have a 4 year undergraduate degree, and have attended law school where I received a Juris Doctorate Degree. I am licensed by the State of Michigan. In addition I have attend numerous seminars and training sessions. I also have received Mediaition training.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
I require clients to pay a Retainer when they wish to hire me. The amount of the Retainer varies depending on the complexities of their case, the anticipated time involved and clients finanicial situation. The Retainer is then Billed against at an hourly rate until it is used up, then clients are billed monthly for services provided. I work with clients regarding payment of my fee as I understand that most clients don't have money saved up for litigation.
How did you get started in this business?
I started as all attorneys do, after I was licensed I began to take clients and handle cases as a sole practioner in my home town, as word spread I became busier and expanded my practice.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have handled all types of legal matters and dealt with all kinds of clients. I have handled family/domestic matters for 40 years, and along the way I have handled civil matters, Juvenile matters, criminal matters, personal injury matters, etc... I have primarily focused on family law for many years.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was recently successful in a very complicated family/custody dispute and was delighted when I was able to obtain full physical custody for my client, as it was the best possible outcome for the children who were placed with her.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Look for an attorney who has experience, is knowlegeable about the particular legal matter, takes time to explain the process and procedures to you before he/she is hired and is sincere about handling your leagal problem. Find someone you feel comfortable with after you have had an office conference with he/she. Check with others who have hired the lawyer you are thinking about hiring.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
All clients need to ask questions about the specific situation theny are in, they need to understand the legal steps that need to be taken to assure success. They also need to understand how the lawyer will be paid for his/her services, and what the services will include.
