Frequently asked questions

When prospective clients first contact our firm to inquire about our services, we speak to them at length to discuss the details of their tax problem and whether it would be cost effective to hire a firm such as ours based upon the size, scope, and complexity of their tax problem. If a prospect and our firm are a good fit for each other and we believe we can resolve their tax problem, our firm schedules a free initial consultation to discuss the details of their case, the options available to resolve their tax problem, the estimated cost of each option, and the general range of time it would take to resolve their tax problem with the IRS or state tax agency under each of the options available. Although we prefer initial consultations be held in our office, consultations may also be held over the telephone.

Tax problem resolution cases can range from very simple to extremely complex. As a result, fees to represent a taxpayer (individual, business, estate, or trust) can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. However, the vast majority of cases are usually between several hundred dollars and several thousand dollars. This does not include tax return preparation which generally ranges in cost from a couple hundred dollars to several hundred dollars for individuals and several hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars for businesses, estates, and trusts. If a business, estate, or trust needs accounting services, that can add to the cost of preparing the entity's tax returns.

After working grueling long hours every tax season for other CPA firms right out of college, I decided to start my own practice in 1990. I figured if I was going to work long hours every tax season, I might as well do it for myself instead of someone else. After several years of doing traditional tax and accounting work at my firm, a client came to me who was behind 7 years in filing his personal tax returns. After we prepared and filed his tax returns, he ended up owing a little over $42,000 with penalties and interest to the IRS. Not having any means to pay his taxes right away, I began to research his options to deal with his tax debts. I soon discovered the IRS Offer In Compromise program. In the early 1990s, it was not a well known program and very few people ever got their Offers accepted. However, I was willing to try in order to resolve this client's tax problem as I didn't see him being able to pay it off over time while also providing for his basic living expenses. After filing the client's Offer and back and forth negotiations with the IRS, I was able to settle his $42,000 tax debt for just $6,500. It was the greatest feeling in the world. Not only was the client happy but his mother wrote me a nice note thanking me! It was the first time I felt appreciated by a client. So, I decided to phase out my traditional tax and accounting practice and get into IRS and state tax problem resolution work full time. I have been doing it now for a few decades.

My clients come from all walks of life. I have represented doctors, dentists, lawyers, contractors of all sorts, real estate agents, truckers, IT professionals, self-employed people from many different industries, business owners of all types, restaurants, retail businesses, even fellow CPAs! Most of my clients are people or businesses who haven't filed all their required tax returns and owe tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to the IRS or state tax agencies. Some have not been caught yet by the IRS or state. Some have had their bank accounts or income sources levied. They have had liens filed against them. They have been summonsed, ignored the summons, and dragged into US District court for ignoring the IRS. They have had their home or business visited by an IRS Revenue Officer (tax collector). in short, I have represented taxpayers who have not been caught by the IRS yet to those who risk being arrested and detained by the US Marshal's office and everywhere in between. Often clients have had something throw them off track in life, such as a divorce, bankruptcy, business failure, or the illness of themselves, spouse or a child. Once they get off track, each year that goes by makes fixing the problem more difficult for them. This is where my firm can help. We can help clients navigate the IRS maze towards a resolution that rids them forever of their tax problem, gives them peace of mind, and allows them to finally sleep well at night.

First, I would tell them to hire a local professional. Meaning, someone within driving distance if by chance they needed to see the professional face to face. Although the vast majority of my firm's work can be performed by fax, phone, email, FedEx, and US mail, I believe it is important for a client to establish a personal connection with the tax professional and to gauge his or her honesty, integrity, experience, and general character. You want to work with someone you can trust. Someone who will do what they say they will do. Someone who will be there when you need them, not hiding behind an answering machine, voice mail, or email. You can only truly judge someone's character by meeting them in person. Once a relationship and trust is established, most things can be done without having to meet in person. Also, a tax professional who is within driving distance is more accountable if a problem arises. God forbid there is a problem, it is much easier to hold a local tax professional accountable than someone hundreds or thousands of miles away. Second, you want a tax professional to be seasoned and extremely experienced. Your best bet is a tax firm that spends 100% of their time each and every day representing taxpayers before the IRS and state tax agencies. Unfortunately many tax firms dabble in tax problem resolution work and don't do a very good job of it at that. You've heard the expression "Jack of all trades, expert at none." Hiring a general CPA firm, tax prep franchise, or general law firm isn't going to give you the depth of knowledge and length of experience that a tax firm who spends 100% of their time working tax case will. At the end of the day, you want your tax problem solved as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Unfortunately many tax practitioners with little experience resolving tax problems will take on your case, talk a good game to get you on board, and then learn on your dime, often resulting in getting sub-par or less than stellar results. Do you really want to take that risk? Lastly, there is another old saying "you get what you pay for." That axiom holds true today as it has for many decades. If you want quality in anything, whether it be a car or a tax pro to bail you out of trouble with the IRS or state, it is going to cost you for their experience, knowledge, and negotiating skills. In an effort to save money, many people hire tax professionals with little or no experience resolving tax problems and as a result, the result they get (between the final amount paid to the IRS or state and the tax pros fees) ends up being more than if they went to the seasoned, experienced tax professional who has spent 100% of their time for decades resolving IRS or state tax problems. Whatever you do, think long and hard about who you hire. Don't make a rash or quick decision that you are not comfortable with. Go with your gut. Hire someone you feel that will take care of you, fix your tax problem with optimal results, and help free you from the stress and anxiety of having tax problems. You will be glad you did.
