Attorney Shapiro graduated from University of Rhode Island summa cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Women's Studies. She received the Robert A. Rainville Leadership Award, the President's Award for Academic Excellence, and completed a distinguished thesis as part of the honors program, entitled "Sex Trafficking and Decriminalized Prostitution in Rhode Island." She co-founded Citizens Against Trafficking.

She completed her Juris Doctorate at Roger Williams University School of Law, where she was a Public Interest Scholar. She won a CALI excellence acheivement award for her work in the Immigration Clinic and study in Genocide & Atrocity Crimes.

In 2014, Attorney Shapiro was named as a Pro bono Star by the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Attorney Shapiro actively works on community education and human rights issues such as sex trafficking through Citizens Against Trafficking, marriage equality and workplace discrimination through the Human Rights Campaign, and pro bono asylum and special immigrant status representation.

She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Massachusetts Women's Bar Association, the Massachusetts LGBT Bar Association, and the Boston Bar Association. She is also a member of the Human Rights Campaign.

She is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts, in the Federal District Court of Massachusetts, in Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Attorney Shapiro has spoken at some of the following locations: Brown University, U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Administration Human Trafficking Training Conference at University of Rhode Island, Roger Williams University School of Law, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Sophia Academy, Central Falls High School, St. George's Church, Berean Baptist Church, Rhode Island Poverty Conference, University of Connecticut "Feminism into Action" Conference, Evangelical Covenant Church, and the American Association of University Women in Newport.
