What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We set up a free initial appointment and discuss the client's individual needs and concerns. At that appointment recommendations are made based on the information that is discussed. The costs are discussed along with available payment options. If the client wishes to move forward we discuss the next steps and get to work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am licensed to practice law in Kansas and Missouri. I have been a lawyer since 2005 and have been in Lenexa for over 10 years. I enjoy taking time to get to know my clients and thier individual needs and concerns. By taking the necesssary time to get to know them and help them understand, I hope to help my clients feel comfortable and in turn create a partnership where I am able to most effectively help them.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
For estate planning, including wills, trusts, power of attorney, medical directives, and other documents, I usually do these on a flat fee which is discussed at our initial meeting.
I represent clients in other matters on a hourly rate or in some cases, on a contigency fee. Fees are always discussed at our initial meeting and before the client incurs any fees or obligation to me.
How did you get started in this business?
I became interested in the law very young when I witnessed some family members go through legal trouble. I have always been disturbed by injustice and have naturally been compelled to jump into controversy in defense of family and friends.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have the best clients! I have had the oppertunity to work with many interesting people from many backgrounds. I enjoy getting to know individuals and their families. I want to understand them and help them understand the legal stuff.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
I think that you should find someone that you are comfortable with, someone that will take time to answer your questions and explain things to you, someone that doesn't treat you like your stupid or like you are just another client, and someone that will be candid with you- even if it isn't so great.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
The most important part is getting in and talking to someone. A good attorney will help you identify what matters and what does not. The law is complicated and without some experience and training it would be difficult for people to accurately "self-diagnose" their situation. Not knowing is uncomfortable. Not knowing what you don't know is the worst and can be disastrous. A good attorney will educate you with their knowledge and experience and give you some confidence- even when things are tough.
