Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
A typical client will set up a convenient time to talk about their case by calling our scheduling assistants at (205)623-1001. We can do phone consults, Zoom, or in-person consults. We have a $100 consult fee and will spend as much time as necessary designing a solution for the client's case. The Client will fill out forms for our conflict checks prior to the consult. After a consult, we will give the client all the options they have for their case and they can make their own decision for their representation.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have worked in legal filed since 1995. I worked for large firms and smaller firms during the years of 1995 to 2010. I opened my firm in 2010 to provide clients with quality legal services. The attorneys at my firm treat each client's case like it is for their family. I graduated from the University of Alabama and went to a private law school, Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. I have worked for other family law firms and know the struggles that clients make to survive divorce, child custody, child support and alimony property cases.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Our minimum retainer is typically $3,500. We require that clients maintain a minimum balance on retainer fo $2,500. We always refund any amount of retainer that is left over at the end of the case and we always request the Judge to consider awarding our clients attorney fees which may allow them to recoup their fees if the Judge decides to order. We have professional invoices sent out to clients two times per month. It lists exactly what was done on their cases and how much of their retainer was used for that service. We take credit cards of all types and from any source of family or friends who help them.
How did you get started in this business?
I worked for a small family law divorce firm just prior to opening my own firm. I saw the needs of clients and knew I could provide a personal touch to help them. I found that I took each client's case personally and have operated from that standpoint even to this day.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of clients from accountants, medical professionals, business owners, TV personalities, insurance brokers, retired and active military personnel, hospitality hosts for dealerships and hotels, sales persons, doctors, lawyers, dentist, waitresses, nurses, counselors, welders, mechanics, self-employed individuals and any type of other professions between. Everyone needs access to quality legal representation in a divorce and we work to provide that to all types of clients.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recenlty had a client who was left without any means of financial support and did not know how to support survive. We quickly filed for an emergency hearing and was able to obtain an order for temporary support and funds to maintain the home. That client is now living a life with certainty of the financial support they need.
I have worked with parents who have been alienated from their children. We have been successful in getting those parents relief to begin rebuilding their relationship with their children.
I have worked with high asset cases where the major focus was division of the marital assets. We have been successful in getting investment accounts and retirement accounts divided pursuant to current case law.
I have worked with business owners and self employed clients to preserve their business post divorce.
I have worked with all types of divorces. I have worked with clients who agreed to their terms of settlement. I have also routinely worked with clients through trial to get a final order.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Make sure that the person you hire works in the courts your case will be heard in and regularly works with your judge. We work with all types of judges in our practice area and are in the courts at least once to four times a week. Knowing how the judge rules on prior cases, gives us insight to each case we handle. We work in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa and Blount Counties. If we take a case outside of these counties, we make sure we know the courtroom and judicial system well. We are honest and will tell each client whether their case is in a court that we know well.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Gather all the information you need to fully discuss your case. Some cases do not require any paperwork at the initial consult. Some cases do require paperwork to fully discuss the events that are about to take place. Make sure you have funding to start your case whether it be your own resources or family/friends as a resource. We provide our clients with a payment link they may use and send to others assisting with legal fees. This enables them to receive financial assistance easily from others in their family or friends. Typically when a client comes to us for a consult, there case needs urgent attention. We are always ready to file any document we need to get them relief.
