Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We offer a free first visit consultation to see if I am a good match for them as in meeting their needs.
Generally, the potential client will give an over view of why they are seeking my services to my partner who takes the calls and schedules the visit.
i meet with them and let tell me why they feel they need therapy. We come up with problem solving techniques, slowly introduce methods they can try to decrease the symptoms, & gradually get them to a satisfactory place. We may meet once or twice a week and then maybe every other week, until they feel they don’t need to see me. People may come back months or years as they feel hey need.
If they need further services such as medications(psychiatrist) or a hospital stay, anything out of my realm, I will assist them in finding that.
I will communicate with clients via phone, email and text between visits and have also done a little bit of Skype-type services for clients that are out of town.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Doctorate in Mental Health Education, a Masters of Science in Mental Health & Rehabilitation Counseling, a licensed LCPC, and certified in neurofeedback/biofeedback. I have several published articles and am a tenured Associate Professor at IIT for over 10 years. Prior to IIT, I taught at Northwestern University in Evanston IL, University of Chicago, and Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, IL.

How did you get started in this business?
I started doing group therapy at an agency with primarily Spanish speaking therapists. They needed a therapist that spoke English for the individuals who were seeking services but did not speak Spanish. After a few years, I decided to open my own practice.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with individuals of all ages; from under 12 to over 65.
Issues have ranged from bed wetting, weight loss to familiar DSM diagnoses of Depeession, Anziety, and anger and relationship issues.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am working with an individual on the Austism Spectrum who just graduated from college and secured his first job. Guiding him with his goals and seeing him meet them reminds me of why I am a therapist.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Find a person that meets your needs and know what you expect from that person. But know that only you can make therapy work as the therapist is not there to tell you what to do but to teach problem solving skills.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
How much time and resources should I devote meet my goals?
