Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First, I offer a 10-minute phone consultation to discuss what the client's immediate concerns are, and to discuss how we can help. Then we follow that with a free 1-hour in-office consultation, one on one with the attorney who will represent you throughout the case. We review the client's assets and debts, and discuss the available options that the client has. We review the financial affairs in detail to help the client understand the bankruptcy process, so that they feel comfortable moving forward.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied psychology in college, and it helped me to understand how removing stressors related to finances could positively impact people, mentally and physically. Having done some landlord tenant counseling in law school also helped me to understand that options are available for people, but are not always easily understood. I take time to work with my clients, explaining the case requirements to them, which helps to make the process go easier, removing as many of these stressors as possible.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
With low overhead, and no TV advertising costs, I'm able to charge a reasonable fee. I can meet or beat a written quote from my competitors as well. I always offer a free 1 hour in-office consultation after a free 10-minute phone consultation. We have flexible payment plans, we work off of your schedule. I can also file cases immediately as the case may permit. Finally, with a chapter 13 bankruptcy, I can defer much of my fee into the debt consolidation as well.
How did you get started in this business?
Bankruptcy was my first job out of law school. It's what I know. I worked at a large bankruptcy firm who represented hundreds of clients a month. I honed my skills there, filing thousands of cases. I've resolved all types of issues and case matters that have come up. I've attended thousands of court hearings and trustee meetings. I've seen it all. I realized my clients needed that one on one personal service. Discussing income and debt is intimate. I am compassionate and patient. (I have 2 young children, so I understand that patience is a virtue!!) I work with my clients to help get the results they want, while handling all the issues that arise.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases. We eliminate your consumer debts and can often get you better deals on your car notes and other financed items if we can't eliminate the debt entirely.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was able to get a client's car back that was repossessed prior to her chapter 13 case. I was also able to get her a much better interest rate on the car note too.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Be prepared. Bring in your financial documents to your consultation - pay advices, tax returns, list of debts, list of assets. This will make your consultation informative and helpful for the attorney you work with.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
The customer should know what debts are owed as well as have a list of their assets and personal belongings. They should also have a paycheck or income statement ready, as well as a list of ongoing monthly household expenses. I use a client intake form with helps with this, along with a list of questions to review which will help fill out the bankruptcy paperwork when it comes time to file.
