Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thervo.
How much does a psychologist cost?
A psychologist costs$50 to $250 per session if the treatment is not covered by insurance, depending on their experience, specialty, and location. Prices are on the high end of the range in major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and New York. With insurance, the average cost of a visit with a psychologist is $20 to $50 per session for the copay.
Online therapy membership plans cost $40 to $70 per week and typically include scheduled appointment sessions held via video conferencing along with 24-hour support through texting or online chat.
What is a psychologist and what do they do?
A psychologist is a licensed mental health professional who studies human behavior and uses an assortment of treatment methods to help people improve their lives. A psychologist can help you understand your emotions, cope with stressful situations, and strengthen your self-esteem. Psychologists guide you in making the necessary changes in your thinking and behavior to improve your mental and emotional health.
A psychologist can help you with a variety of short-term and long-term problems:
Depression and mood disorders
Anxiety and panic attacks
Stressful situations
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Eating disorders
Gender or sexual identity concerns
Self-esteem and body image concerns
Marriage and relationship problems
Grief or loss
Anger management
Addiction
Can a psychologist prescribe medication?
Only five states allow licensed psychologists to prescribe medication—Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, and New Mexico. Psychologists in these states must complete additional psychopharmacology training and certification before being allowed to write prescriptions.
In the rest of the U.S., only a medical doctor can prescribe medication. Your psychologist may refer you to your general practitioner or a psychiatrist for a prescription if needed.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A psychologist is not a medical doctor but is trained in helping clients with mental health conditions. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication—except in Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, and New Mexico—but can diagnose issues like depression, anxiety, or phobias and provide talk therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or other treatments.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is authorized to prescribe medication. While psychiatrists will diagnose your condition and determine the proper treatment plan, they typically don't offer talk therapy and will refer you to a psychologist for those services instead.
Can a psychologist diagnose ADHD, autism, depression, or other conditions?
A licensed psychologist can diagnose mental health conditions in all states except Indiana and Maine. However, the psychologist must refer clients to a psychiatrist or other medical doctor if the condition requires medication. Consult a psychologist near you if you have concerns about ADHD, depression, anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, or other mental health conditions.
How can I find the best psychologist near me?
When seeking a psychologist for mental health care, first consider the type of therapy you would prefer. Common methods include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
Psychodynamic therapy
Humanistic therapy
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
Once you've decided which therapy method you'd like to pursue, follow these tips to find the best psychologist for you:
Choose psychologists who specialize in your area of concern.
Identify at least three potential psychologists to choose from.
Ask for recommendations from your medical provider.
Read psychologists' reviews on Thervo and Google.
Confirm the psychologist is licensed to practice in your area.
Speak with the psychologist via phone to discuss the questions shown below.
Schedule an initial session to make sure the psychologist's communication and treatment style is a good fit for you.
What questions should I ask psychologists?
Ask these questions to help you find a psychologist who is the best fit for you:
How long have you been practicing?
Are you licensed as a psychologist in this state?
What experience do you have in treating clients with my concern?
What therapy style or treatment methods do you commonly use for this issue?
What does a typical session look like?
Do you give homework or reading assignments?
How do you determine success in therapy?
What is your success rate in treating past clients with this issue?
Will you see me if I run into problems between sessions?
Do you accept my health insurance? Will you bill the insurance company directly?
Are there any exceptions to the confidentiality rules for my treatment sessions?

I decided to explore hypnotherapy to address my chronic procrastination.
Before embarking on this hypnotherapy journey, I was plagued with constant self-criticism because I could not live up to my own expectations and potential. I felt disillusioned and frustrated for never following through or completing some initiative and goals which I have undertaken.
I had never undergone hypnotherapy before so working with my hypnotherapist, Farzin, was the first time. On my initial appointment, Farzin explained precisely how the hypnotherapy session would be conducted and what to expect. He answered all the questions I had and was mindful to ensure that I felt comfortable with the process. Because I had never had hypnotherapy previously, trust was essential for me. From our first meeting, Farzin made me feel comfortable, and I could put my trust in him. With his guidance, I have been able to peel the layers and take a deeper look inside myself and do the necessary work needed to transform my life.
I can honestly say that I was stunned to start noticing changes almost immediately after my initial hypnotherapy session. The very first thing I noticed was that I was eager and looking forward to getting to my To-Do list every morning! At the end of each day, my heart feels full of a sense of accomplishment. I go to bed, patting myself on the back and celebrating my efforts instead of the negative verbal and mental flagellations which marked my days' end in the past. Most remarkedly, I have garnered insight into the root causes of my procrastination. I now have a deeper understanding of who I am and why I do what I do.
Since my hypnotherapy, I feel happier and more accomplished. I was able to get some things done in the 30days of hypnotherapy that I had procrastinated for 3 years!!! I am finding that I am not afraid to take on new challenges and jump right in and land on my feet. What I find amazingly peculiar and love is that it registers clearly and prominently on my memory when I have committed to getting something done. It is as though I have now developed a very visual mental To-Do list and can clearly see what has been ticked off as completed or not so that I can course-correct. I LOVE it!!! Additionally, I am finding that I am not afraid to take on new things and am realistic about what I can do. I no longer feel overwhelmed and am setting the appropriate boundaries (yet another unexpected by-product of hypnotherapy). I now have a better grasp of things that used to frustrate me previously.
What has been incredible is this sense of feeling that "I can do anything!" and I am excited about the possibility of using hypnotherapy in other areas of my life.
This has been a life-changing experience for me. I have had a mind-shift, and I see personal rewards beyond the initial goals I had envisioned for myself. Farzin is a highly skilled professional and healer who is kind, very understanding. He is also very insightful and knows how to make people feel comfortable. After having completed my initial sessions, I now feel empowered to go out into the world and begin living the life I had always envisioned for myself but has eluded me for so many years!
If you are looking for a hypnotherapist, who is insightful and can quickly get to the core of your fundamental issues to provide you with guidance and a tool-kit to healing, I highly recommend Farzin.
