Don is very knowledgeable and compassionate. He responded quickly to my initial inquiry regarding services. I would definitely recommend him and Shorehaven Behavioral Health.

    Frequently asked questions

We have scheduling specialists, Alex, Marianne, and Ryan, who will handle your phone call sensitively.  We'll learn about the help you seek, your insurance coverage, your schedule, and your location.  Then we will consider who may be a good person on staff to help you.  We'll try hard to give you an appointment with 5-14 days.  Occasionally, we may need more time to get you an appointment with the right person to help you.

When you come for the first meeting, the psychotherapist will learn about your goals for therapy, your life experiences, and the concerns that made you decide to come for help now.  We'll give you some recommendations for how we can best help you.

All of our therapists have four years of college, 2 years of graduate school, an year of internship, and then go on for a two year additional training period.  So, it takes about eight years of education and training to become a licensed therapist.  Then, Shorehaven exceeds Wisconsin requirements by continuing the advanced training with in-house seminars and clinical training.

Most people in our region have some kind of health insurance. Virtually all insurance covers mental health and substance abuse treatment.  We are also members of the National Health Service Corp and so we have a sliding fee scale for those who do not have insurance.  We do take credit cards, cash, or checks for deductibles and copayments.

I have 49 years of experience treating patients with every kind of problem. I have been a trainer of therapists for 35 years.  During that time, I have taught or supervised over 300 professionals.  Shorehaven Behavioral Health is  a major training center.  That has been our passion.  I came into this field after a period managing in business.  Shorehaven was started in 1996 and has developed into a major mental health and substance abuse treatment clinic and training clinic in the southeastern Wisconsin area. Now, with telehealth, we can work with anyone in Wisconsin.

I have worked with individuals with every kind of mental health and substance problem, couples, children, and families, people with traumatic experiences, and those with substance abuse. So, I train my staff and colleagues to help with whatever crisis or problem you may bring.

In the past two years, ten graduate schools have suggested interns come to Shorehaven for advanced training.  That is a testiment to the skill and experience of our staff.  We also had an oportunity to participate in a grant that enabled us to begin a quality Dialectical Behavior Therapy [DBT] program to help teens and adults with more challenging emotional problems.

Get help as soon as you have problems or symptoms. The sooner you get help, the shorter the treatment necessary to help most people.  Therefore, with long wait lists at many mental health clinics, we try to minimize the wait.  The more effort you put into therapy -- sharing openly, practicing what you learn -- the more benefit you will see.

    1. What are the changes you noticed recently? These may show up as symptoms or changes in behavior or patterns.

    2. What do you want to see different in your life, what changes, what new behavior?

    3. What life changes have happened in the last year, especially recently, and how have they affected you?
