About

At Bottom Line we specialize in fair prices, great personal service, and offering our expertise to clients who need help with a range of income tax and accounting issues, from individual and business tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll, to tax planning and IRS representation. We believe that that the most important part of our job is not being good with numbers, it's being good with people!

Founder Bill Brough started his first small business in 1988. He quickly realized that running a business required learning how to keep the books, which led to an MBA in finance and accounting. Eventually, Bill was hired by Universal Accounting in Salt Lake City to teach their unique bookkeeping and tax preparation courses to students from all over the country. He also worked several seasons as a tax professional for H&R Block.

In 2008, UA completely revised their tax curriculum, The Professional Tax Preparer. Bill was the principal author of the new course, meaning that when it comes to taxes, he can literally say he “wrote the book.”

Today, Bill maintains a growing accounting practice. He is also a speaker on tax topics for Lorman Education Services, and a former adjunct instructor of financial accounting at Salt Lake Community College. Bill is currently President of the Utah chapter of NATP (National Association of Tax Preparers).

But of all these jobs, his favorite is still connecting each year with his clients, many of whom have brought their taxes exclusively to him for ten years or more, and whom he considers himself lucky to call friends.

Frequently asked questions

Bill Brough has an MBA in finance and accounting, and has passed his Enrolled Agent exams to earn the EA designation, which makes him comparable to a CPA or an attorney in terms of legal recognition for practice before the IRS. He is also the author of The Professional Tax Preparer, has been an adjunct accounting professor, and is the President of the Utah chapter of the National Association of Tax Preparers.

All kinds! Indiviudals. families, newlyweds, students, self-employed entrepreneurs, small businesses (partnerships, S corps, corporations) and 501(c)(3) non-profits.

There are so many! Years ago I had a client who had gone through a bitter divorce and didn't know what she was even supposed to do to file her taxes. Her husband wasn't paying child support, and her income was not enough to pay the mortgage so she had lost her home and was barely making ends meet. When I was able to get her a refund of over $7,000, she burst into tears. It was probably the first good thing that had happened to her in a while. It taught me a lesson, which is that a tax return is not just a legal obligation, it is something that is wrapped up in the details of people's lives in an intimate way. I never forget that my business is not about numbers and dollars, it is about people.
