Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It's important that you and your therapist spend a few minutes understanding your symptoms and goals. This way, they'll know if you're going to be a good fit for what they do. And you need to know if they're a good fit for what you need! We do this through a brief phone call, or the free consultation appointment you can book online (green button on our site). After that, the work begins!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All of our clinicians are doctors, having earned their Ph.D.s. and practice as psychologists, social workers, or mental health therapists. They've invested many years of training and thousands of hours of experience to work with YOU.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Most of our counseling sessions are billed at $150/hour, which is pretty much the standard. Some are less, if the clinician is still receiving supervision. Ask us about it. We can sometimes factor-in your financial situation when finalizing the price.
Assessment costs vary significantly, based on the reason for the testing. That influences which tests we use, the time it takes to administer, and the time it takes to write the report. See our Assessment FAQ page for more information about assessment costs.
How did you get started in this business?
We have all spent years preparing for our service to you. Some of that has been in school, but others have been in other positions in university counseling centers, nursing homes and clinics--both in the United States and abroad. Having a private practice allows us the chance to work with people who have decided on their own, that they're ready to change. And they've chosen to see us! There's nothing more satisfying to us than a good session where you learn something important about yourself and are able to put it into practice in your life. Seeing people grow and thrive gets us up every morning!
What types of customers have you worked with?
For counseling, between us all, we have a number of specializations: depression, recovering from suicide loss, subtstance abuse / addiction, anxiety, troubled relationships, anger management, and trauma / PTSD.
For assessment, we use a variety of tests to help people discover what may be causing their particular problem. These may include ADD / ADHD, learning disability, autism, dementia, or PTSD, to name a few. Their final report contains a specific diagnosis that is often the important first step toward receiving accommodations, medication, admission, receipt of benefits, employment, etc.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Almost daily, we have those moments in session where a light bulb turns on--where you see something in a whole new way. This allows you to respond differently, which brings the relief, joy or hope you've been needing. We don't know what those moments will look like for you, but we WILL find them once we start our work together!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Find someone well-trained, experienced, and passionate about therapy (or assessment). We strongly encourage you to talk a few minutes with the person you're considering meeting with--it's important to make a good connection. If they don't present themselves well in that moment, its probably better to look at other options before making a final choice in who'll be helping them along this journey. Of course, work within your abilities, but we recommend you not let price be your sole factor in making the decision. Sometimes you get what you pay for. And this is an investment in you--possibly the most important one you'll ever make.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
We recommend you ask yourself if you're ready. It takes a real commitment on your part--time, money, emotional energy. It requires you to be honest with yourself and your therapist. It calls for you to take what you learn and apply it to your life, which can feel awkward or scary. But it pays off! You've been doing it this way for a long time, and you have to decide if you're ready to go a totally new direction. We're ready!
