Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Phone conversation first, then in-person appointment to discuss and/or prepare tax returns. Additional information needed is usually taken care of by telephone or email. Once completed, signatures and payment, and you're on your way!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelors degree in Accounting, and minimum 18 hours per year of continuing education and seminars related to income tax preparation (law changes, form changes, etc.)
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Base fee is $175 (includes your home state), and increases for additional forms required to be filed. 25% discount to all new clients in the first year. Average fee for tax year 2019 was $230.
How did you get started in this business?
Started by working for H&R Block, learned the ins and outs of tax preparation and customer service in the industry.
What types of customers have you worked with?
All kinds! Employees, Self-Employed, Small Businesses, Students, Retirees, Non-Residents (Foreign Nationals), etc. I have prepared for individuals, corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, payroll taxes, and sales taxes.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
By asking a client about the tuition paid to her college that she thought wasn't deductible or usable, I amended her past 3 years and found her $10,000 of refunds. Client for life :)
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Feel comfortable with your relationship with the preparer. Ask for recommendations from trusted friends and colleagues. Remember, everyone's tax situation is unique. Just because your co-worker or neighbor got a huge refund doesn't mean you will. And above all.. be honest with your tax pro. If the tax pro's fees are cheap, the service probably is too.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
How many years has the tax pro been doing this work? Are they available all year long? What happens if you get a letter from the IRS or your state tax department? What happens if we don't have enough time? What if we can't pay the balances to the IRS or State?
