Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Personal interview -in person if possible or by phone if necessary - to determine their needs and to understand their goals. If client is a fit for us, we send an Engagement Letter that outlines what we will be doing along with a form to gather all necessary information.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
25+ years in banking and tax work for major Fortune 500 companies. Prior IRS experience. I am an Enrolled Agent - the highest credential the IRS gives to tax preparers. As such I am licensed to practivce before the IRS to represent clients in resolving their outstanding tax issues, In addition I am a Fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute which recognizes expertise in getting tax problems resolved.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing is dependent upon several factors: 1. The complexity of the Tax Return 2. The type of return being prepared and 3. The accurancy and completeness of the information provided by the taxpayer.
I offer a discount to dependents of clients whose returns I prepare.
How did you get started in this business?
Worked seasonally with a local accounting firm for 15 years doing tax returns while employed in Banking. Joined IRS in 2009 before setting up my own firm
What types of customers have you worked with?
Individuals at all income levels for tax preparation from simple returns with W2s to more complex returns for rental property owners and Small business owners.
Specializing in helping taxpayers who have prior issues such as unfiled returns, tax collection notices, unpaid back taxes or are being audited.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Client, single mother of three, had been filing with another company and was incorrectly told that she could not claim the children since the ex already had. Since the children lived with her and she provided for their care I amended the prior returns, provided proof the IRS that she was entitled to claim them as dependents and secured a refund for the prior three years that was in excess of her annual income. Very heartwarming to be able to help a struggling parent simply by doing things right.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
All taxpayers should first Check the preparer's credentials on the IRS website at https://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf to make sure that they are properly licensed to provide the service you need.
Taxpayers can also check the websites of the National Organizations to find a preparer in their area: https://taxexperts.naea.org/ (National Assocaition of Enrolled Agents) and https://www.taxprofessionals.com/natp-members (Natioanl Assocation of Tax Professionals)
Lastly, they should "interview" the preparer to determine if they are comfortable with them and a good fit to provide the services they want. If the preparer automatically claims they will get them a bigger refund - RUN AWAY!
While proper tax preparation does require tax knowledge, we believe that the relationship between a tax preparer and a taxpayer also requires mutual trust, integrity and respect. Without this, the ability to ask, and answer, question and to council is lost.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
1. What has or will be changing in my life that MAY affect my taxes - i.e. upcoming marraige or divorce, children, job change, retirement, etc.
2. What are my financial goals and will proper tax planning help to acheive them - i.e. retirement, college expenses, etc.
