Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I have a simple process that aims to take the stress out of tax time. Any new client I work with will be set up on our secure portal to share his or her documents and answer a quick tax questionnaire. A new customer will also sign an engagement letter, so both parties feel confident.
Then, I get to work! Your returns are professionally prepared and reviewed. Once they're complete, you will be immediately notified and they will be posted to the secure portal for electronic signature.
After that, you will electronically sign your completed returns, pay your invoice, and viola...your taxes are done!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am an IRS-licensed Enrolled Agent (EA) authorized to prepare returns and represent taxpayers before the IRS and related state and local taxing authorities. The EA designation is the highest credential the IRS awards to tax professionals. Enrolled Agents are often referred to as "America's Tax Experts".
I have been preparing tax returns for individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations for 10+ years. I have worked for public accounting firms, tax preparation firms, and private organizations.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
I don't charge per form or per hour like most tax professionals - my pricing is completely transparent and up-front. I feel you should know what you're going to pay for my services.
If you have a basic return, expect to pay the minimum fee. Items like investments, capital gains/losses, self-employment, or rental properties will raise this fee. At any time, I will give you a personalized price quote at no obligation.
How did you get started in this business?
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and Business Administration, and have worked in tax accounting since I graduated from college many years ago. I started directly out of college as a staff tax accountant at a large regional accounting firm here in Pennsylvania, preparing taxes, performing tax planning and litigation services, and educating people. From there, I moved into private industry working with a large regional nonprofit hospital & health network, again as a tax accountant.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I work with clients coast-to-coast! Most of my clients are individuals who return in the beginning of each year for the annual tax preparation services they know and trust. About half of these clients also participate in tax planning services that occur throughout the year to ensure they are on track when it comes to tax time each year.
I also have a handful of small business clients that trust me to provide them with accurate bookkeeping and payroll services.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
I always urge potential clients to check your professional's credentials! Most of the time, it is a simple check you can do online for yourself. For tax professionals, ensure they are an Enrolled Agent (EA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or tax attorney.
Additionally, I caution potential clients not to fall for the false advertisement that one tax preparer or accountant can get you more of a refund than another. It all comes down to knowledge and trustworthiness. If your tax professional is knowledgeable, he/she will get you the best refund possible the first time around.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Potential clients should ensure their chosen professional is a good fit for them. If you have a special tax situation that not all professionals are knowledgeable in (for example, virtual currencies), ensure your tax professional knows those niche laws and regulations.
In addition, talk with your tax professional about your tax situation, and provide them as much information as they'd like. It may seem like we ask for a lot, but I do not ask for information I do not need. For example, I always ask for a copy of last year's return if you're a new client. This isn't because I like being a pain - this is because last year's return ensures this year's is accurate, and can hold information on items such as carryovers and losses.
