Discover Counseling exists to improve your life and relationships using effective counseling skills within a caring environment. We use research-based approaches that give you hope and confidence that things can change in your life, and we have counselors that will walk with you through that journey with patience and wise guidance.
We love being with people in their difficulties to let them know they are not alone and that we can help them grow or change. It's exciting to instill hope in people and see them realize a new potential that restores life and renews their energy.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When working with new clients, we try to go over as much of the details and process as possible at the start to ensure a good fit and make things clear to avoid misunderstandings. We'll find out about your schedule, financial concerns, potential insurance, and any other needs in order to match you with the right counselor.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Aaron Potratz, Owner and Supervisor, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, and Oregon-approved Clinical Supervisor. He also has a certification in trauma counselor, and his Masters degree is in Marriage & Family Therapy.
The other counselors on staff have similar training, education, and certifications. We want all of our counselors to be highly trained and skilled in order to provide the best services to our clients.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
We have counselors on staff with fees that range between $30-$125 per session. Some of our counselors accept insurance, and others are out of pocket (with a sliding fee scale) - but you can still use your HSA/FSA card to pay for these qualified services.
How did you get started in this business?
I (Aaron) started out as a solo practice in 2007 but as my practice grew I realized I couldn't see all of the clients who were being referred to me, so I started hiring other like-minded professionals who I could trust to do this work with me and alongside me. I currently have 4 other counselors, one support staff, and an intern.
I also started a second counseling practice (Life Discovery Counseling Services) in 2016 with a business partner that was based in SE Portland, and which now has a second site based in Hillsboro. Life Discovery has 4 counselors on staff.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
It's important to find the right fit for you. Things like schedules and finances need to line up, obviously, but you also want to make sure you feel comfortable with your counselor, able to open up and be honest with them, you need to feel understood and know your counselor really gets it, and they need to have confidence in their knowledge of your issue(s) and ability to guide you through it.
