Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Client arrives 15-20 minutes early filling out some brief paperwork, and then meets with the therapist for a one hour assessment.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
M.Ed., LPC, CCDP-D
Masters in Counseling from University of Missouri St. Louis - 2007
Bachelors in Marketing from University of Indiana - 1993
I have a decade of extensive experience and training in DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), Motivational Interviewing, and Behavioral Activation. All of these treatments are considered best in practice for corresponding problem areas such as Borderline Personality Disorder (Self-Harm/Suicidality), Substance Abuse, and Clinical Depression.
However, research indicates the most important measure in effective counseling is the quality of the therapeutic relationship & why we believe it's important for all our counselors at Elephant Rock to do their own inner work limiting clinician issues from interfering with therapy.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Private Pay - $125, 60 minute session.
Some counselors are In-Network with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, & United Healthcare.
Out-of-Network - All other insurance companies who provide you access to an out-of-network provider.
How did you get started in this business?
I was in the business world for several years after completing my undergraduate degree from Indiana University. I had a sense something in my life was missing and felt a calling to help other people. I've been doing psychotherapy for over ten years now and feel grateful each day I was able to make this change.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Serious & Moderate Addiction, Suicide & Self-Harm Behaviors, Borderline Personality Disorder, Clinical Depression, Stress & Burnout, Loss of Meaning, Anxiety, Anger & Intense Relationship Issues.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Make sure you connect with the person, and don't hesitate to move onto another counselor if you sense it's not a good fit.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Do they want to use their insurance? Using insurance requires giving someone a formal mental health diagnosis which is something to consider if you haven't already received a formal mental health diagnosis in your medical history. Many clients are happy to use insurance, the pros and cons should be discussed with your counselor.
