Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Sometimes we meet in person and sometimes we connect by phone. After listening to the taxpayer's situation, we discern who would be the best fit to handle their needs. We look over their previous tax returns to see if all the appropriate deductions were taken and get a handle on what to expect for upcoming returns. If necessary, we pull IRS transcripts to find missing information to help resolve the taxpayer's case.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelor of Science degree from the Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota; Enrolled Agent (enrolled to represent taxpayers before the IRS); 17 years educating small business owners in business networking skills.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Our fees for tax preparation start at $250. We charge by the hour, which rewards taxpayers with good records and simple returns. Clients with more complex tax issues, small businesses, and incomplete records should expect to pay more. Our fees for tax debt resolution start at $1,500. If an Installment Agreement, Offer-in-Compromise, or Currently Not Collectible status is needed they are each charged separately.
How did you get started in this business?
I started doing bookkeeping, payroll, accounting and office management for small businesses in 1983. I added presenting financial education seminars in 1994. I started offering tax prep and small business tax education seminars in 1998. I added Tax Resolution services in 2016.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Home-based businesses (Direct Sales, massage, hair stylists, insurance agents, construction, computer repair, personal trainers, Rental Property owners, etc.), people moving into MN, first-time homebuyers, first year taxpayers; people with several years of unfiled taxes, people who owe money to the state or IRS, people with liens or levies on their bank accounts or paychecks for unpaid back taxes, people who dispute what the state or IRS says they owe.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I helped a couple resolve their back tax debts of $300,000 so they could get their lives back and get married!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Ask if they have experience in dealing with others in your situation.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
What do you think you need? (Help with bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, tax preparation, back taxes, etc.) How much time and energy would you save by having a professional handling these duties? Even if you don't think you can afford to hire the help you need, ask the professional for recommendations on where you can go to get good help.
