Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
What I request will depend upon the services being proposed. If a tax return, I will need 3 years of back tax returns in addition to the current year documents. This ensures we capture the historical information. I've been known to identify prior errors that have lead to refunds far greater than the fees to prepare the amended returns.
I work to forge a proactive alliance with my clients whereby we are in contact monthly or quarterly at a minimum.
You're not just a once a year client to me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master degree in Taxation. I've been a CPA for 25 years. I am a member of the AICPA & FICPA.
I pride myself in knowing a vast amountof industries e.g. real estate, restaraunt, construction, professional services, personal services (salons/spas), entertainment, artists, teachers and doctors.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Fees are based on complexity, type of services and if a one time engagement vs ongoing services. Fees may also be based on the type of entity eg Non-profits are discounted 15%. First Responders/Law enforcement are discounted 15%.
I do have flat fee arrangements for some engagements e.g. monthly accounting with tax return preparation at the end of the year. The fee is based upon the average volume of transactions, time to prepare tax return and unlimited calls/emails throughout the year.
My fees are usually less than what I can potentially save you in taxes. This is most true with the business client that works strategically with me in tax planning for the corporation and personal income taxes.
How did you get started in this business?
My mum worked as an accountant so I guess I followed her path. I enjoy the interaction with clients, the strategy with numbers in tax work and helping the business owner understand & own their financials.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Real Estate investors, Condo association, Entertainers, Artists, Doctors, Lawyers, Medical Group, Restaurants, Franchise, Retired with many stock portofolios, Law Enforcement, Firemen, Manufacturers, Wine industry suppliers, wineries, Dairy farmers, Horse breeder & trainer, Foreign income reporting and oil investors.
Scope of services have ranged from compiled financial statements, IRS audits, Sales Tax audits, Payroll tax Audits, Back tax filings, Multi-states for individuals and corporations. Corporations paying foreign dividends.
I have experience preparing individual, corporation, partnership, trust, estate, gift and s-corporation returns.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was amending four years of income tax returns for a client to comply with recent tax law change regarding reporting Foreign income. I found the returns had been prepared incorrectly by their prior accountant. The client was due a sizable refund of taxes plus interest.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
If you've received an IRS (or other agency) notice to audit your returns, gather all prior year tax returns, notices - if applicable, and call ASAP.
Please, don't avoid the IRS it will only make it worse in the long run.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
How do you base your fees?
Do you require a retainer?
Who will be doing the work?
Do you subcontract to outside USA? Yes, some do. Avoid them!
