About

www.kathymonroymd.com

I know it can be difficult to find yourself struggling with your emotions which in turn create disharmony, inhibition or unhappiness. These difficulties can feel overwhelming and affect every aspect of life from relationships to your work and daily activities. Sometimes it is difficult to understand why we react the way we do and how to achieve a change in a deep and long lasting way. My goal is to understand the process that has led to the current challenges in your life and then focus our treatment goals into helping you understand how these difficulties came about.

This will pave the way towards the emotional freedom necessary to make substantive lasting changes. The path to recovery and well-being is as unique as each individual and that is why we will come to a decision together as to which path might suit you best.

I am a Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist. I am Board Certified and provide different treatment modalities including psychoanalysis, psychotherapy alone or in combination with medication. Medication may be an important part of the treatment, sometimes not enough and at times not needed at all.

Frequently asked questions

Once an appointment has been made, you will be emailed or faxed 2 forms which are needed for your first appointment. These 2 forms are “The Welcome Packet” which include some general information about the practice, including our policies and consents and “The New Patient Questionnaire” which is meant to gather some general information about your/or your child’s background, psychiatric and medical history.

We realize that these forms can feel long and time consuming but they will help Dr. Monroy focus the initial interview and will find them helpful in the process of the overall assessment. We ask that you fill them out as completely as you can, but you will be going over all these topics throughout the general evaluation, so if you find questions that don't apply or that you would rather discuss in person please feel free to leave them blank.

Dr. Kathy Monroy completed her residency in Adult Psychiatry and her Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital - University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She received her Medical Doctor degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Monroy has been interested in research since early in her career and worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Miami - Diabetes Research Institute prior to entering her psychiatric residency training. She has published in several medical journals and presented in national as well as international meetings. Dr. Monroy continues to engage actively in teaching and research at Florida International University where she serves as Faculty of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health for Hebert Wertheim College of Medicine.

Dr. Monroy is Bilingual and is able to conduct evaluations and treatments in both English and Spanish.

Dr. Monroy Professional Fee is $275 per session. She is not a part of any insurance panels and cannot process directly for insurance reimbursement. As such, she is considered an “out of network” or “non-participating” provider for most insurance plans. If you have a health benefits policy that provides mental health coverage with “Out of Network” benefits, you may be entitled to insurance reimbursement for any provided professional services. Many patients regularly submit their invoices from Dr. Monroy directly and receive reimbursement according to the terms of their insurance policy. Potential clients should call and ask their insurance/agent about coverage for "out of network providers" for mental health to determine their own specific benefits.

Dr. Monroy will assist you in the process of filing the paperwork with your medical insurance for any possible reimbursement. Please check with your medical insurance regarding the terms of your policy and verify out-of-network benefits and reimbursement rates.

Potential reimbursement is between you and your insurance carrier, and you may discuss this with your insurance company by contacting them directly. Regardless of the patient’s ability to receive insurance reimbursement, full payment for all services is required at the time of each appointment, unless other arrangements have been discussed previously with Dr. Monroy.
