    Frequently asked questions

When working with a new client we start the process by getting to know each other. Initial paperwork is given to the client to fill out and we talk about their needs and what they would like to get from counseling. If the client is comfortable and would like to continue services a follow up appointment will be made where another session of talking may be needed to discuss the goals of the client or we may go over a  treatment plan that we have created for the client so that they can add in any input and are aware of what to expect.

I decided that I wanted to help people work through their problems when I was working as a technician at a drug and alcohol Rehab center. I saw what mental health issues and diagnosis did to people that did not seek proper treatment. I already knew I wanted to help others and seeing this need helped me decide that this profession what exactly what I was looking for.

I have worked with all kinds of people. Kids, adolescents, and adults. I am lucky t o have worked with a variety of people and enjoy working with all types of clients. Some with life events happening and they just need someone to talk to, some with diagnosis of anxiety and or depression, some with drug or alcohol problems, and some that are in need of coping skills.

For people that are looking to begin counseling services, start by making sure they have experience in the area that you need help in. After deciding on a counselor, decide if you are comfortable with them. You will be sharing a lot of private information and need to feel comfortable. Next, consider if they have similar views as you on the important life topics. It is important that you know from the beginning if this will be a successful relationship because it is hard to start over with a new counselor, which often times is discouraging to people who need services so they will stop going all together.

Ask any questions in areas in which you have strong beliefs or values in. Make sure the counselor you chose has a similar values or beliefs. If you are not sure, just make sure they are completely nonjudgmental, open, and easy to talk to.
