Over a 30 years ago I found myself working with individuals in retirement that faced many challenges to their retirement lifestyle due to inefficient retirement planning.

Unfortunately, many people are not prepared for today’s financial challenges in retirement. It is not entirely their fault. Schools do not do a good job of teaching financial literacy. The media is full of conflicting and biased information. Natural human tendencies, such as greed and the fear of missing the next best thing, lead to poor decision-making.

Good news! There is hope. And, the odds of success are great if we make educated decisions and have a strategic plan based on math and science. We do not need the next hot stock or computer program. In addition to my Retirement Planning firm, Legacy Financial Advisors, I serve as a local Chapter President in Longwood, Florida for the American Financial Education Alliance, a non-profit 501c organization.

I believe in holistic retirement planning. While many Advisors want to manage your money, they don’t have the tools to provide holistic advice. Thinking of a client’s financial life as a short story can quickly become a tragedy. A holistic retirement plan considers every aspect of a client’s financial life, not just their investments. Surprisingly, many so-called advisors are only licensed to offer limited solutions. Even worse, the product options are often limited by their company structure. They may not be allowed to tell you about certain options, even if they believe their option is not best. No company has the best answer for every problem. Make sure the people with whom you work have a full toolbox—not just a Swiss Army knife or duct tape they try to use for every possible problem.

I strive to be independent in my financial solutions. I have obtained professional designations that require the holders of those designations go through intensive educational training and to follow a code of ethics that demand they must do what is in your best interest, not theirs. I received financial training from The American College of Financial Services, a private college focused on professional training for financial practitioners, where I earned the Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF®), Charter Life Underwriter (CLU®) and Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®) designations. I am proud to have also met the certification standards to be a Certified Bucket Plan® Advisor in addition to a Securities and Investment Advisor Representative.

One way I like to explain this is by asking, “What’s best for my family?” We are all protective of our family. I would not want to tell a client anything I would not tell a family member if they were sitting in your seat and in the same circumstances. Isn’t that what you would want?
