About

My practice is focused on helping clients get the most out of their financial resources, using tax-informed approaches, smart planning and accurate accounting, and solving problems that arise.

After thirty years preparing taxes and providing tax advice for family and friends, I have spent the last three years helping a growing group of clients – both paid and pro bono – with their tax planning and preparation and financial planning. Accurate tax filing prevents problems before they arise.

I am licensed by the Internal Revenue Service as an Enrolled Agent, which means that I can represent you as a taxpayer in the process of an exam or audit, preparing to put the best case forward for your facts and circumstances, then advising how to escalate an audit through local IRS field management, working to minimize the bite of collections on tax and interest, and appealing the findings and penalties from the audit through the IRS national appeals process. The goal is to solve your tax problems at the least feasible expense to you in time, disruption, and cost.

Frequently asked questions

We'll usually start with an initial, no cost consultation. After 15 to 30 minutes I would be able to give you an quote on the cost for tax preparation or accounting. I will stand by my quote, barring big surprises from complex elements that didn't come out in our first discussion.

Then we get going, with an in depth interview to gather the needed information. I may give you homework - documents to dig up, facts to find - or provide you with a tax organizer that will prompt you to gather the needed information.

I go to work when you have everything together, and will prepare a draft tax return for your review. Often those reviews call for further refinement or promt for more information.

When we're done, you'll have a tax return that you understand in detail, represents my professional judgement of the supportable tax positions, and that arrives at the lowest tax allowed by the law.

I hold an MS in Taxation from Golden Gate University, MBA from the Harvard Business School, a BA from Vassar College, and has undergraduate and graduate certificates in Accounting from Sacred Heart University.

I am an Enrolled Agent (EA), with a license from the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS in all fifty states and US territories; this federal license is also accepted in most states, including Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Tom is a QuickBooks Pro Advisor who can help clients set-up and clean-up the systems that track their business books and records.

Every year I spend many dozens of hours in Continuing Education in tax and accounting topics, several times more hours than is required by my license as an EA. In an every changing area of law and regulation, it is critical for I stay uto date to be able to best help you. Tax is a business of lifetime learning.

My prices are based on the complexity of your tax situation. With just a few minutes on the phone I can usually provide a firm quote for preparing your return. Accounting work is billed by the hour; we can establish a rate once I understand your unique situation.

After 30 years helping friends and family with their tax obligations, Tom became a full time tax professional in 2009. He runs a highly personalized tax practice for clients from his base in Ridgefield, CT. My first tax question came from a classmate, who was curious if he could take accelerated depreciation on a new piano he was about to buy for music studio.

I work with small and medium businesses, usually in the professions or trades, to help them select and structure the right business entities to help them minimize taxes while maximizing savings.

I also have worked with thousands of individual tax payers located all over the US and even the world. They range from young to senior, low income to high net worth - and each one has a very different and unique set of tax needs.

If your tax person doesn't ask questions - lots and lots of questions - then they aren't digging deep enough to understand your needs and your business. Every person has a different tax situation, with different facts and circumstances that can drive very different tax strategies. Your tax professional needs to dig deep and find out what you need.
