Brian D Mahan, SEP,
About
I am not a traditonal talk therapist. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, specializing in working with developmentl truama, shame and shock trauma.
“The Somatic Experiencing® method is a short-term body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, together with over 45 years of successful clinical application.” - Taumahealing.org
If you've heard of the body/mind conection in the therapuetic proces, then you have found an advocate of how important the physiology is in true and profound healing. I help my clients track their current challenges, habituations and vicious cycles back to their orignal wounds, implicit beliefs and defense structures that perpetuate the patterns.
We'll break through the cognitve dissonance of "knowing better" and still behaving the same way you always have.
I LOVE my work. I got into this work, origianlly, as a client. I found the efficacy and speed of my transformation so palpable and undeniable, I changed the course fo my life and became a practitioner. Thirteen of my clients over the past 15 years have also become Somatic Experiencing Practitioners.
Currently, I assist two faculty members train new practitioners through The Somatic Experiencing Training Institute's three year program. I also assist and teach a series of trainings on how to effectively work with shame.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a comlimentary 20-minute consultation by phone or video conferrence. It will give me a chance to answer any questions that you may have and us a chance to see if we are a good fit.
My job is to get you to quit seeing me as quickly as possible. Personally, I am mortified how often I hear therapists say things like, "It could take a client 5 or 6 years to get the place where..." It's shocking how often I hear that.
I do not require standing weekly appointments. This is your process and you get to determine the pace. I'm here to assist you on your journey, not take you through my process or formula.
I focus a lot on also providing tools and skills, so that you can self-regulate, self-soothe and manage your emotions, anxiety, and panic.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have done extensive training in working with shame and developmental trauma, beyond the three year training to obtain my ceritifcation as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started in this business?
I used to suffer from developmental trauma, social anxiety, self-sabotage, self-loathing, shame, low self-esteem, depression, habitual re-enactments, and then came the 7-10 full-blown panic attacks every day, following a catastrophic car wreck.
After three sessions with a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, my panic attacks stopped and I entered the three year training program to become a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner two weeks later.
