Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When I receive a query, usually by email, we'll set up a 15-minute initial phone conversation. Based on a review of needs, a second more detailed conversation may take place. At this point, I present clients with a written proposal outlining a course of action, a suggested timeframe, and corresponding fee structure. We will review progress on a frequent and consistent basis. We'll meet in person as and when possible - though most often, we "meet" virtually. You will receive a written summary of our work together upon completion or at intervals determined by mutual agreement.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
B.A. from Luther College, Decorah IA - Art & Graphics
Year of international study, Nottingham University, UK - Archaeology
M.A. from University of Leeds, UK - Education
M.A. from Oxford Brookes University, UK - Organizational Development
Year Fellowship from European Council of International Schools, UK - Educational Assessment
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Depending on the engagement, this may be an hourly fee or (usually in the case of shorter projects) or a flat rate. Most clients I have are repeat customers and occasionally we set up a monthly retainer for ongoing engagements.
How did you get started in this business?
Having been an educator with several Master's degrees in education and organizational development, I left the world of "school" to begin consulting - and haven't looked back! I still get to work with teachers, administrators and Board members, but I am also very frequently engaged by business teams, C-suite executives, artists and other creatives, non-profit managers, and more. It turns out that all my preparation led to a wide-ranging consulting practice based on simple principles of focusing on the positive, keeping relationships at the center of every interaction, and being open to every opportunity that comes along.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with private individuals, schools, corporate teams, non-profit work groups, committees, foundations, Boards, and more. Most recently, I have worked with Early Childhood and independent schools in strategic planning and individual coaching.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I run two writing workshops each week with dedicated cohorts of writers in all genres. We recently held a writing retreat in Ojai, CA for 6 writers who have since published (or are in process) novels, a memoir, and a stage play. I am personally writing a television series and have written a feature film now in production. I have completed the first novel in a trilogy and am working on the second, and have two poetry chapbooks.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Make sure that the agreement for work together addresses as many questions as possible in writing - even after you start working together! An initial proposal may not anticipate changes you, as the client, would like to make along the way. In this case, amendments to the scope of work are always helpful so that your consultant can provide what you are looking for. Frequent communication is key - from both parties! I welcome a regularly scheduled "meet" as well as impromptu calls and emails.
